FURTH, George and SONDHEIM, Stephen
Company
New York: Harold Prince, N.d. [1970]
88 mimeographed pp. bound in turquoise stiff paper wrappers, secured with two spilt pins to left edge. Title in gilt to front wrapper. Edges to (oversize) wrappers a little worn, contents near fine and very well preserved.
‘PLAYING VERSION’ of COMPANY, SO STATED ON TITLE PAGE, AND DATED APRIL 26 1970, THE DATE OF THE SHOW’S OPENING ON BROADWAY.
After a brief out-of-town run in Boston, Company opened on Broadway on 26 April 1970, whereupon the text and score in use at that performance became the final, official script of the show. The title page of this final version, the so-stated ‘Playing Version’, also carries a printed space for an inked number to be added by hand; this copy bears the number 81. Although with no signature of ownership this copy comes from the estate of George Chakiris, who won the Golden Globe and the Oscar for his performance
as Bernardo in the film version of West Side Story (1961, lyrics: Stephen Sondheim). Chakiris played Bobby in the first US national tour of Company (although he clearly used a different script to rehearse, as this one is unmarked).
The definitive version of a classic of musical theatre, from the estate of George Chakiris.
