Anne Heywood’s Copy: An Early Bisexual Film

£2,000.00

[LAWRENCE, D.H.] [dir. RYDELL, Mark] CARLINO, Lewis John
The Fox
Toronto: Rayan Productions, 1967

131 mimeographed pp., bound in green stiff paper wrappers secured with two split pins to left edge. Title in gilt to front wrapper. Some edge wear to (oversize) wrappers, but a very well preserved copy.

The Fox (1967) was Mark Rydell’s directorial debut. Loosely adapted from D.H. Lawrence’s 1922 novella and starring Sandy Dennis, Anne Heywood and Keir Dullea, it is one of only a handful of US films of the 1960s to address the subjects of lesbianism and bisexuality. The rights to the project were acquired by Anne Heywood’s husband, the producer Raymond Stross, with the intention of launching Heywood’s American career. It worked: Heywood was nominated for a Golden Globe for her performance, and signed to a four-picture deal by Paramount.

Although unmarked, this screenplay comes from the estate of Anne Heywood.
