DAVIDSON, Lewis
Vampirella
London: Hammer Film Productions, 1977
120 xeroxed pp. made in-house, with copied punch holes from
a previous Velo binding. Bound in yellow patterned untitled wrappers, secured with two brads to left edge. A little rubbed and marked, but a very good copy.
FIRST DRAFT SCREENPLAY FOR AN UNPRODUCED HAMMER FILMS PRODUCTION. Based on the popular US-based Warren Comics vampiress created by Forrest J. Ackerman in the 1970s.
The original Vampirella adult comic, published by Warren magazine, placed Ackerman’s vampiress in an array of imaginative scenarios involving science fiction, horror, sex, bondage, mystery and bloodlust. Lewis Davidson’s screenplay has her as part
of a starship crew, leaving her home planet Elysia to ’seek out
and destroy the Elysian renegade Starlock, [who] has been [...] breeding with humans for many generations and producing half- immortal giants who range from Julius Caesar to Hitler.’ (How anybody can be ‘half-immortal’ the script doesn’t say.)
According to articles in Cinefantastique and The Reprobate, a project based on the Davidson script was in pre-production at Hammer Films between 1975 and 1977, but never made its way out of development. Barbara Leigh had been provisionally cast in the title role when AIP’s Samuel Arkoff decided to cancel the project.
British screenwriter Lewis Davidson is best known for his work on films between 1964 and 1971 -- notably Hands of the Ripper (1971).
This copy of the screenplay comes from the archive of the American producer and agent Paul Kohner, and was duplicated from an original master in the UK, the whereabouts of which is now unknown. We can find no other copy in any institution worldwide, and no copy appears in auction records.
