A Legendary Unmade Hammer Film Script

£600.00

Hayles, Brian. McCord, Jonas. Vlad The Impaler

Elstree: Hammer Film Productions, N.d.

Original 113-page Revised First Draft Screenplay by Jonas McCord and Brian Hayles for the unmade horror film under the working title "Vlad The Impaler", Undated circa 1990s. Bound in Red Stiff paper wrappers with cut-out window in British style. Evidence of dried spillage to the top of pages throughout the script, but hasn’t affected the readability of any text. Very good overall.

Based on the 1974 BBC Radio 4 play Lord Dracula, rumour has it Michael Carreras nabbed the film rights after receiving calls from Anthony Keys and his son James Carreras raving about the play the morning after it aired. Ken Russell as Director, Richard Burton, Richard Harris and (who else??) Christopher Lee were all rumoured to have been attached at some point, but the project struggled to find funding and was eventually put on ice.

The accompanying “Development Prospectus” shows that by 1994, there was involvement with Director Joe Dante (Gremlins, Piranha and The Howling) to direct the film with financing from Miramax and a budget of $13 million. However, the project never got out of preproduction. The Prospectus also shows other unmade Hammer films, including Hideous Whispers, The House on the Strand, a remake of Quatermass and the Pit and Cloudburst.

A scarce and unpublished script to a noted unmade film by the revered British horror production company.
